EP Review: Late Night Thoughts - Bridges & Tunnels
WORDS BY JAZMIN LEMUS
Late Night Thoughts are a folk-pop duo out of Brooklyn. In December, the pair released their latest EP titled, Bridges & Tunnels, via Mifflin Street Music! If you pay attention to the lyrics, you will see that the name of the EP is perfect. Please allow me to take you briefly upon the journey I went on as I listened to the EP.
When listening to the first track titled “Get Back Up”, you may be reminded of artists such at OneRepublic due to the sound. Because if that sound, this song is the kind of song that you would hear on any Top 40 radio station. “Get Back Up” is also a song that would get a crowd at a show to clap along if they weren’t familiar with the duo. With lyrics such as “I’ll get back up, I always do” being repeated throughout the song, they’re words that anyone that is listening may have told themselves in the past whenever they’ve been stuck in a situation where they may have felt like they’d never rise up. If any music supervisors out there are reading this review, this song definitely makes for a great contribution to a scene about hope and resilience in an upcoming film [wink, wink].
Track 2 is titled “Sacrifice” and it’s another banger that you’d be surprised to NOT be hearing on the radio or on a movie/TV soundtrack. “Sacrifice” was also the lead single for the EP back in October. If Late Night Thoughts is a new band to you, this song would be the place to start with.
“Faith” will be your jam if you love the slower songs/ballads. If you’re a fan of piano, this is your jam! “I need you here with me cuz I’m losing, losing my faith” is a lyric in this song that one could argue makes it about hope. BUT the person saying this needs the other person around to help them get the strength they need to get through the bumpy road. Could this other person be a lover, a friend, a parent? You can listen to the song and decide for yourself.
The fourth track on Bridges & Tunnels is “Love Ain’t Cheap’. A more upbeat song, the percussion in this song seems to feature congas and the xylophone? Either way, this one will get you to head bop. Also, can we please have more xylophones in pop music?
The final track of the EP is “Inches”. If you give this a listen and also enjoy R&B, it does feel like there is some R&B influence in there somewhere. A great pop song to end the EP that makes me want to hear an A Capella version and after you hear it, you will want the A Capella version too!
If you like pop and acoustic and can spare 17 minutes with 17 seconds, please give Bridges & Tunnels a listen. You will not regret it!
