Dallas singer-songwriter, Brigitte Mena, released her single, “Honeybee” back in late October and it rules! In this Q&A, Brigitte talks about the single, how her studying Psychology in college has affected her writing, Hayley Williams, and more!

Congratulations on the release of “Honeybee”! Lyrically and musically, I loved it as soon as I heard it. What does this song mean to you?
Thanks so much and I’m glad you love it! “Honeybee” represents a song of personal growth, so it is definitely special to me. This song also really brought awareness to how much I’m inspired by nature. I’ve started to see this trend in my writing over the past year, so it has been interesting to see that unfold.

You studied Music and Psychology in college. How do you think your background in Psychology has affected your songwriting?
I’ve always been fascinated by the human psyche and behavior, so studying psychology has really shaped my style and songwriting process. I’ve loved being able to merge my love of both music and psychology through my writing. I think ultimately, studying psychology has helped me better understand why I’m inspired to write about certain topics like identity, relationships, human behavior, and mental health. It’s given me a toolbox of “answers” to questions that have always lingered in my mind.

What is your earliest musical memory?
Way back to when I was 9 or 10 years old. I wrote a song about a snowman and I remember singing it around the house all December long. LOL. Christmas has always been my favorite holiday and I would go ALL out, so it makes sense my first song was Christmas themed. My mom still jokes about the song today.

If you had a chance to collaborate with a musician, dead or alive, who would it be?
I would absolutely LOVE to collaborate with Hayley Williams from Paramore. I think her recent solo project is beautiful and that we share a similar style. She also seems heavily inspired by the human psyche, so it would be pretty great to create something together.

If you were an instrument, what would you be and why?
Either the harp or cello. I think they are the most beautiful sounding instruments and are underrated sometimes. I actually played the violin for 3 years, and if I could go back in time, I would have definitely switched to the cello. I love the warm sound that both instruments project.

What's the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
Trust when the timing is right. You may never get that opportunity again, so sometimes it’s best to go with your instincts.

We all have our days where it may not be going as well as we’d like. People deal with their worst days in different ways. What helps you get through the bad days? How do you stay positive?
Knowing that you have another chance to restart every single day. There’s nothing better than waking up to a beautiful sunrise knowing you can shape your day into something better than the one before.

Thank you for taking the time for this Q&A. Any last words or final message for the readers?
