Music Q&A with Justin Linn
San Diego pop rock/indie solo artist Justin Linn (who also plays in Save Ferris) recently released a new video for his single “The Wanderer”! Justin took some time to answer some questions about his single, his solo career, how he ended up playing in Save Ferris, his dream collaboration, and more! “The Wanderer” is streaming everywhere now!
Congratulations on the release of your new single! What was the inspiration behind it?
Thank you! I think the intent behind the song was purely subconscious and introspective. Like most songs I write, I don’t have a clear lyrical agenda until I step back when it’s finished, or even sometimes months later, and have some kind of mental epiphany on where I was coming from. Of course, the wonderful thing about art is once you release it the audience takes ownership and it becomes meaningful in whatever interpretation they get from it.
When you started working on your solo music, did you know you what you wanted it to sound like? When and how did you decide to release solo music?
Well, I think it just kind of happened as an experiment back in 2017, coming out of playing in bands for years and not being able to get across the sounds I was hearing in my head. It was also a way for me to pull back the curtain and have the confidence to put my art out under my name. A lot of bands I’ve been in I wrote most everything, but given a team dynamic I always wanted to share the experiences and credits. Don’t get me wrong- I love collaborating and being involved in a giant creative melting pot; it just seems the way the world has transitioned technologically over the last decade, I’m wearing multiple hats. I’m always learning and I have no idea what will happen and I have no idea what I’m doing! HA!
You’ve toured with huge artists throughout your career. Who was the first big band that took you out on the road?
I’ve had some amazing highs and heavy lows. That’s life, though. The first band that gave me a break were my friends in LA; they were a screamo/rock band called Bleed the Dream. They took me out on the entire 2005 Warped Tour in a bus! I was 20 years old and awestruck by the entire experience.
How did you end up playing in Save Ferris?
It honestly happened very organically and I think timing had a lot to do with it. Some good friends vouched for me, and I got an audition. After passing the test it was go go go, until the world stopped last year. I’m still looking forward to whatever the future holds with SF and beyond.
What artist/band are you a fan of that would surprise people?
Hmm… I don’t really have any guilty pleasures, per se. Do you and forget about the rest! If I really think about it, maybe like Whitney Houston or something. I’ve never been ashamed to admit I love pop music, though. I can listen to Slayer one day, and the next I’m on a BeeGees or Madonna kick!
Who has been your favorite band to see live?
I always love seeing The Bronx live. Matt (their singer) is so genuine and real onstage. Just a great rock ’n’ roll band that I’ve loved since their inception. That being said, I’m not sure anything could top seeing The Police reunion tour back in 2007 at Dodger Stadium. Surreal.
If you could collaborate with any musician, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Prince. Just so I could see how he worked. Such a genius and out-of-this-world performer. People like that are like aliens to me. Bowie is another one.
What is your favorite city to play in?
Chicago is always a great vibe.
This last year has been hard for bands and music fans because tours didn’t take place. What’s one thing you've missed about touring?
The connection with the audience. There is nothing for me that touches that feeling.
What helps you stay positive?
My two kids, running, meditation and trying to stay present. I’ve been very transparent with my own mental health struggles, and I think it’s very important we erase the stigma. Some days are easier than others.
Any last words or final message for the readers?
We’re all coming out of one of the most stressful and scary times in our world. It’s important we all employ more compassion and connection within our daily lives going forward. Tell your friends and family you love them!
