Music Q&A with John McKelvey of The Rumjacks
Last month, Celtic punks, The Rumjacks, released their new EP, Brass For Gold! The EP is the follow-up to their 2021 album, Hestia. The band is currently on the road supporting Dropkick Murphys and will be heading out on a headlining tour beginning May 1st. While the band has been busy releasing music and playing shows, they’re still taking time to talk about what they’ve been up to. In this Q&A, Johnny McKelvey (bass), talked about the EP, who he’d like to see live, the best piece of advice a musician gave him, and more!

Congratulations on the release of Brass For Gold! What does the EP mean to you?
Thank you so much! We are so happy to finally get it out and start hearing some reactions. So far everyone has been super into it so we are stoked. We are just glad we were able to put something out so soon after Hestia. We don’t like sitting around hah.
What’s your favorite song off the EP?
I really like “Bounding Main”. Simple song and just a fun one to play.
When did you realize you wanted to create music?
Probably early on when I started really getting into music. Everything was so exciting and just loved hanging out with friends creating music. Am very lucky I get to still do this.
What is one artist or band that you haven’t seen in concert, that you hope to see someday?
Turnstile! Loved their latest LP and would be great to see them live.
What's the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
The more you move around on stage, the less people notice your mistakes. Has worked well for me for a long time.
We all have our days where it may not be going as well as we’d like. People deal with their worst days in different ways. What helps you get through the bad days? How do you stay positive?
On tour I guess it’s just finding time to take a little break, go for a walk, separate yourself from everyone for a little while and just chill. It can be hard after a while so just try and find a balance.
Thank you for taking the time for this Q&A. Any last words or final message for the readers?
