Music Q&A with Sammi
Last month, 19-year-old singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Sammi, released her debut album, Silver! Sammi recently took some time to talk about the album, how she started playing music, the best piece of advice a musician has given her, and more! If you’re a fan of Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Adele, and/or Bon Iver, Sammi is definitely an artist you need to give a listen to!
Your debut album, Silver, is out now. What does it mean to you? What do you hope listeners get out of it?
I am SO stoked that the album is finally out!! There has been so much put into this by myself and my incredible team. This album sincerely, honestly, and organically captures the moments in my life that have shaped me. Sharing this music is absolutely terrifying because of how personal it is!! However, that’s exactly why I share it. I can only hope that it reaches those who need it most - and can potentially help heal others in ways only music can.
What’s your favorite song off, Silver?
That’s a tough one! Every song has really deep sentimental value to me - however my song “One” has impacted me the most. That song alone changed my life, and completely changed the way I write music. It taught me that it is possible to turn something painful into something beautiful and healing for others.
What was the first instrument you learned how to play?
I began learning the piano from my mom when I was 5 years old! Very soon after that I began learning classical guitar.
What is your favorite album of all time?
Another tough question! I am OBSESSED with listening to music - I make monthly playlists on spotify with as many new songs as possible! As of right now, my favorite album would have to be Sacred Spaces by SYML. One word - CAPTIVATING.
If you were an instrument, what would you be and why?
I’d be a guitar hands down. I feel like guitars have such a rich story to tell about where they’ve been, what they’ve seen, and the variety of music being played on them.
What’s the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
The best advice I have ever received from another musician is this: “always say thank you”. As a musician in this industry it is SO easy to put myself down and question what I’ve got going, ESPECIALLY when receiving compliments. I can talk myself out of just about anything, and downplay everything! What I learned from this advice is to just put your insecurities aside, and graciously accept when others acknowledge your hard work. Honestly, although simple in retrospect, doing this has changed my perspective about my potential and has motivated me to work harder than ever before.
Thank you for taking the time for this Q&A. Any last words or final message for the readers?
This album was carefully crafted for the people. Every song, every lyric, every note. I can only hope it impacts even just one person in their healing process, creative process, or even simply for their enjoyment - that is what makes it all worth it.
