Music Q&A with Riley Pearce
Earlier this month, singer-songwriter, Riley Pearce, released his debut album, The Water & The Rough! In this Q&A, Riley talked about the album, who he would like to see in concert, and more! To purchase The Water & The Rough, you can do so HERE.
Congratulations on the release of The Water & The Rough! What does the album mean to you?
It means a whole lot to me. It’s the most intentional body of work I’ve made, I really thought about every aspect for a long period of time and tried to make it interesting from both a songwriting and sonic point of view.
What is your favorite song off The Water & The Rough?
Isn’t every song supposed to be like an artist’s children? Tough question that always changes answers with me, I think this current moment's favourite is probably “Stone on Stone”. For what reason, not sure. Just feels like a Stone on Stone kind of day.
What is one thing you did during the recording process of this album that was new to you that you would like to carry into the future when recording more music?
Great question, this album was recorded in a house down in Margaret River over a two and a half week period. It was incredible having everyone who was part of the album making process live at the house whilst they were recording their parts and then also be around for the end of day dinners and debriefs. I loved the full immersion into the recording experience and putting your life on hold for that time.
What is one artist or band that you haven’t seen in concert, that you hope to see someday?
Bon Iver or The War on Drugs - hard to pick.
We all have our days where it may not be going as well as we’d like. People deal with their worst days in different ways. What helps you get through the bad days? How do you stay positive?
I’m a huge believer in morning routines, if I can get a good morning routine in, I'm set for the day. A little bit of exercise, water, breakfast, shower, coffee and music playing through the house and I’m good to go. Some days this doesn’t happen or isn’t enough and you get caught in a funk. My partner is very grounding for me, she always tells me sometimes a day is a write off and that’s ok. If in doubt, dog parks and fresh air and starting again tomorrow will do the trick for me.
Thank you for taking the time for this Q&A. Any last words or final message for the readers?
I really hope you enjoy the album as much as I enjoyed making it.
