Album: I'm Glad It's You - Every Sun, Every Moon
So I’ll start off by saying, I’m a big fan of I’m Glad It’s You. It’s been almost a year since I last saw them out here in L.A. and when shows resume, I cannot wait to see them again because those shows will be super special; 1) because of the COVID-19 pandemic and 2) because of the story behind their latest album.
I’m Glad It’s You released Every Sun, Every Moon earlier this month and I’ve been trying to figure out what to say about it. I’ve been looking forward to this release. If I’m being honest though, I’ve had a bit of trouble listening to it. Not because it’s terrible. No way! It was beautifully written with melodic guitar riffs included, but it hits you in a particular way if you’ve ever lost someone who has meant a lot to you.
All I can tell you is give this album a listen and if it hits you like it’s hit me, it could be because that’s what this album is about. The band lost their friend, Chris Avis, in a van accident back in the summer of 2017. The band and Chris were on the road kicking off their tour and the van rolled over. Everyone in the band survived, but not Chris. He was 31. While this album makes you bop at times, those lyrics will make you think. “Desert Days” is the first track off the album and it sets the mood for what lies ahead.
Life comes in full circle. I saw and heard about I’m Glad It’s You for the very first time at the Cavis Tapes 10 Year Anniversary Show, a show celebrating 10 years of Chris documenting shows. Had it not been for that show, I might not be writing this now. Or maybe I would be, but using different words. I didn’t know Chris. I only met him super briefly once through mutual friends. Every Sun, Every Moon almost makes it seem like it was written about a friend we all lost. While I don’t have a favorite song from the album yet, I believe this one will end up on many people’s AOTY lists, including mine.
