Music Q&A with Ravive
Earlier this month, alternative pop artist, Ravive, released her single titled “Social Shit”. “Social Shit” unsparingly digs into the ethics of social media curation. In this Q&A, Ravive talks about the single, how she got into wanting to make music, her favorite artist to see in concert, and more!
What is the story behind “Social Shit”?
It's about the ethics behind social media curation and how dangerous that constant accessibility can be. Social media can be a great place to network, keep up with old friends. But we're seeing more and more cons about excessive usage. Every feed is curated - people show what they want others to see, and that's just a small window. That opens the doors for people to make assumptions about others, easy assumptions. That can be so damaging to one's psyche.
When did you start writing “Sahara”? Was that the first song you wrote, since it was your first single?
I think it was summer of 2020? Maybe a bit before, I lost all concept of time during the pandemic. But it was a while ago, I just started writing it a capella and then brought it into the studio when I had completely finished it a capella. I began writing music when I was 8 and have written around 600 songs since then, so this was just the next step. Did solo for a while a long time ago, was in an alt rock band for 5 years, and now am starting fresh under the stage name Ravive.
When did you realize you wanted to create music?
Age 3. I saw my dad playing classical guitar, and I wanted to copy him. But I had a pop perspective. I wanted to put on huge, bold concerts. Dress up. Sing and dance at the same time.
What was the first music video you ever saw?
Oh jeez. I have no idea! It was probably Backstreet Boys or Britney, those are the first two artists I ever remember hearing. It might've been Everybody (Backstreet's Back), that was on heavy rotation when I was young.
Who has been your favorite artist or band to see live?
Backstreet Boys. My favorite artist of all time and the best live show I've seen. Their show has a taste of everything, for everyone, and they just have such good, positive energy.
If you were an instrument, what would you be and why?
I'm not sure! Maybe a guitar because it's the first instrument I picked up.
What's the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
Be seen. It didn't make much sense to me at the time, but I understood it more as the years went on.
We all have our days where it may not be going as well as we’d like. People deal with their worst days in different ways. What helps you get through the bad days? How do you stay positive?
To be totally transparent, I am not a positive person. A lot of people think I'm a pessimist, but I consider myself a realist. It's the only thing that's gotten me through some very dark days, to be realistic. False positivity has really beat me up at times. My personal approach won't work for everyone, but for me, maintaining a realist perspective during hardships is the best way to push forward.
Thank you for taking the time for this Q&A. Any last words or final message for the readers?
