Music Q&A with Steven Murillo of Me From You
Pop punkers, Me From You, are about to release their EP, Rival Towns, this upcoming Friday! In this Q&A, the band's very own Steven Murillo talks about the EP, working with Alan Day of Four Year Strong, his favorite thing about making music, and more!
Congratulations on releasing your EP, Rival Towns! What does this EP mean to you?
Thank you! This EP means everything to us. It was so fun to record and it very much feels like the beginning of something special.
With Covid coming into the picture last year and still being in the picture, how do you feel the last year and a half affected the making and creative process of the EP?
I think that during quarantine, we had a lot of free time to flesh out these songs. Working remotely was something Chris and I (Steven) were pretty used to - Chris was living in Florida when we started working on these demos so it was manageable for sure. I think once Alan Day came into the fold it was almost the same. We’d do Zoom calls to break down song structures and work through riffs and transitions. Staying flexible with time, writing, and recording is important to our approach to songwriting.
What’s your favorite song off Rival Towns?
I think it’s different for everyone, but my personal favorite is “Years Behind”. It rips! But I honestly love every song on this EP and we’re all excited to finally release it.
You worked on Rival Towns with Alan Day of Four Year Strong. What was it like to work with him?
It was absolutely surreal! Working with Alan was a lot of fun and we learned a ton about songwriting and recording. At the time of pre-producing these songs, we were unsure of whether we would take the trip out to record with him; at the time, it was just Chris and I in the group. He eventually convinced us and it was the smartest move we could have made. He shaped the sound of our band on this EP and brought out aspects of these songs that went way over our heads - so we’re forever grateful to him!
What instrument do you not play that you hope to learn someday?
Actually, during quarantine, I was living with my best friend who bought an electric drum set. We ended up trying to learn how to play by watching youtube videos in our living room haha. So I’d say drums is something I’d love to keep learning.
What is your favorite thing about making music?
I think my favorite thing about making music is getting to express things that are hard to put into words. Sometimes playing a guitar riff is about playing something you’re feeling and not just because it sounds cool or anything like that. So I think that’s my favorite part - speechless self expression.
We all have our days where it may not be going as well as we’d like. People deal with their worst days in different ways. What helps you get through the bad days? How do you stay positive?
I’ll usually go for a long run, or listen to an album I really love. Belting out your favorite choruses is almost always a guaranteed mood changer!
Thank you for taking the time for this Q&A. Any last words or final message for the readers?
