Music Q&A with Internet Love
Florida based indie rockers, Internet Love, recently released their single titled “Lottery Eyes”! In this Q&A, members Jon Gonzalez and Andrew Parrott, took some time to answer questions about the single, their previous releases, who they’d like to see in concert someday, and more!
Congratulations on the release of “Lottery Eyes”! What does the song mean to you?
Andrew: Aye! Thank you so much! We’re so glad that this song is finally out and people get to finally listen to it! I think this song means more to Jon than it does to me, at least in a lyrical aspect, Jon put a lot of stuff that reflected his own life and feelings that occurred during the whole writing process.
Jon: It means the world to me on a personal level. I wrote the first half of “Lottery Eyes” while talking to an individual I had started a relationship with from another state. I wrote the second half after we realized it wouldn't work out. All the songs Internet Love has released leading up to “Lottery Eyes” have been about that individual. This is the last one I will write about that person; it's a final send-off in a way, and I wish the best to that person. I've grown and have moved on and have found true love in myself, my family, friends, and my girlfriend. I think I'm ready to start writing about those new life experiences I've had with those people instead of focusing on the past.
Looking back at the songs that you released prior to “Lottery Eyes”, how have you grown as an artist?
Jon: I take more time writing the songs I bring to the band now. I try to break them down musically as much as possible before getting it to the band. We're currently a two-piece Andrew and me, and that's how it's been for a while. Working with people in a live band setting has helped a lot songwriting-wise compared to the EP where all the drums and bass were midi. Still, now we write in a full band setting with Pablo Falcon, formerly of SuperGold and Alex Abbasi from BloodBather. We all have very different groups that we play in. Still, it's a culmination of all our influences when we work together. It shows what the potential of Internet Love is. This time around, we also chose to work with Kyle Hoffer in Orlando, Florida, and he brought the song to its fullest potential. I've personally been a huge fan of the work he's done for Worst Party Ever, and it was a no-brainer to work with him once we realized he also resides in Florida.
Andrew: For me personally, I’m always incorporating new styles and techniques into my playing, which is always opening new doors and gives me a lot more to work with. Jon and I are always listening to new music, where midway one of us will stop and say, “New Internet Love song!”, and then burst out laughing. As for “Lottery Eyes”, this song has a way better mix than some of our previous songs. We got the chance to work with the amazing Kyle Hoffer, who helped record the last Hail The Sun album. Kyle mixed and mastered the track, as well as helped us add a lot of atmospheric layers to it.
What is one artist or band that you haven’t seen in concert, that you hope to see someday?
Jon: I would love to see a band called "iwrotehaikusaboutcannibalisminyouryourbook" (really long band name, I know). I got into them around 2015 when I started getting into other bands like American Football, Merchant Ships, Two Knights, etc. They significantly influence the music I bring to Internet Love, even though you probably can't tell. It's little things that I take heavy inspiration from like riffs, transitions, and lyrics.
Andrew: Danggg there’s a lot! I love concerts! I’d have to say Origami Angel.
If you had a chance to collaborate with a musician, dead or alive, who would it be?
Andrew: Tim Henson. As one of my favorite guitarists, it’d be a dream to work on a song together or even jam with him. Also Tom Petty, he’s such a badass and I’d definitely learn a thing or two from him.
Jon: It would be an absolute dream to work with Mike Kinsella from American Football. I've admired his guitar technique and lyric structure for a long time, and I would love to break down that process with him.
We all have our days where it may not be going as well as we’d like. People deal with their worst days in different ways. What helps you get through the bad days? How do you stay positive?
Jon: What gets me through some of my worst days is knowing how big a blessing life is. I have a loving family, an amazing girlfriend, and a super supportive friend group. Even when things might not be going well with them, I always realize that situations will work out the way God intended. I understand that life is all about adapting and working through those adaptations. It can be challenging, but there's always a new light that can spark in a dark room.
Andrew: I like to put everything in perspective, and think about all the things that other people may be going through, and relate that to what I’m going through to see how big of a deal it really is.
Thank you for taking the time for this Q&A. Any last words or final message for the readers?
Andrew: Thanks so much for listening to Internet Love, and to all musicians: KEEP PLAYING!
Jon: Thanks for reading, check out our latest single, “Lottery Eyes”!
