Q&A with Morgan Reese
On March 4th, singer-songwriter, Morgan Reese, will be releasing her debut EP, Letters From The Invisible Girl! Leading up to the release of the EP, Morgan has been releasing singles and creative music videos! In this Q&A, she talks about the EP, some of her music videos, who she would collaborate with if she could, and more!
In March, you’ll be releasing your debut EP, Letters From The Invisible Girl! via EMPIRE. Congratulations! What is the first song off it you wrote?
Thank you! The first song I wrote was actually ‘butterflies,’ a little over a year ago.
What is your favorite song off the EP?
My favorite song from the EP changes all the time honestly. But at the moment, it’s ‘joe,’ and I’m really excited for people to hear that one.
The music videos for “Invisible Girl” and “not cool anymore” are awesome!! How was it decided that the music videos would go in the direction they went in?
Kimber-Lee Alston, my amazing director for the ‘Invisible Girl!’ music video, sent me a treatment that drew inspiration from two of my favorite things: Black Mirror and a y2k aesthetic. I immediately fell in love with the idea. When I was writing the song, I pictured the Invisible Girl going through different obstacles to finally be able to be seen; but I wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted it to look. When you listen to the lyrics, it’s not really that happy of a song, so I like how the colorful scenery and VFX contrast that.
The chalkboard visuals for ‘not cool anymore,’ were based around the lyric “figuring out how to get on with my life”. I see it as writing equations and coming up with formulas for how to stop thinking about that one person. I had the idea for the cover art before I thought to make that the lyric video, and finding a chalkboard to write on was harder than I thought it would be. So for the video, my friend and I actually snuck into an empty classroom at my school, and we filmed it there.
When did you realize you wanted to create music?
I feel like I’ve known from the moment I picked up my first guitar. Music has always felt so right for me and I’m so glad I get to share my favorite thing in the world with all the people who listen to my songs. I listened to a lot of singer-songwriters growing up, like Lauryn Hill, India.Arie, Norah Jones, and so many more. I remember thinking, “If they can do all that starting with just their guitar and voice, so can I.” And here I am. (haha)
What instrument do you not play that you hope to learn someday?
I don’t play any brass instruments, but I’ve always been really impressed by trumpet players, and I love the way it sounds so I’d love to learn it someday!
If you had a chance to collaborate with a musician, dead or alive, who would it be?
I’d love to collaborate with Nile Rodgers. He’s one of my all time favorite guitarists and musicians and I think we could create possibly the grooviest song of all time.
We all have our days where it may not be going as well as we’d like. People deal with their worst days in different ways. What helps you get through the bad days? How do you stay positive?
One thing I love doing is finding new music. I do a deep dive into the discography of an artist I haven’t listened to and go for a long walk. I find that being outside and discovering new music, while being able to live in your thoughts on your own helps me clear my mind and feel better when I’m down.
Thank you for taking the time for this Q&A. Any last words or final message for the readers?
Thanks for listening and keep an eye out for my EP, Letters From The Invisible Girl! out March 4th!
