Singer/songwriter and Dim Mak rising star, Aviella, recently released her new single, "Comfortable"! Produced by QUIX, it’s the second song on her second EP with Dim Mak. In this Q&A, Aviella talked about the song, how Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter” helped her get through hard times, her favorite thing about music, and more!

Congratulations on the release of “Comfortable”! How did the collaboration of the song come about with QUIX?
We’ve been working on “Comfortable” for over a year actually! When I recorded the vocals, I thought QUIX would be the perfect compliment because I wanted the song to sound moody and emotional. I think he did such an amazing job making the production exactly what I was going for! I was featured on his song “All I Have” a few years back, and I’m so happy he was able to return the favor!

“Comfortable” stands as a reminder that confidence and strength should be found on your own and not just with or for a partner. Is there a specific story/moment that influenced you to write this song?
The co-writers and I believe that independence is super important, even if you're in a relationship! There could potentially be moments in a relationship where a person can become “comfortable” and rely on the emotional stability of their partner, and I really was inspired by twisting the meaning and finding that comfort within!

Your story about the bullying that you dealt with throughout middle school; you used your music as a form of therapy. What artists/bands helped you get through that as well, if there are any specific ones?
I remember listening to a lot of Christina Aguilera when I was younger and “Fighter” was definitely my jam. The words were so powerful to me, as they helped get me through hard times and not let negativity affect me. I’ve also loved Taylor Swift, as her lyrics and strength as an artist helped me to navigate my own songwriting and helped push through obstacles in my own life.

Who has been your favorite artist or band to see live?
I’ve had the opportunity to see many live concerts growing up, which have each shaped me as an artist! I saw Post Malone a couple years back and clearly remember a moment where it was just him on stage with his guitar, it felt super emotional and was definitely something I won’t forget! I was at Metallica’s 40 year anniversary concert in San Francisco and it was amazing to hear so many of their songs sounding exactly the same as their original recordings. The way that they had such a connection with their fans in the crowd was amazing too. And of course I always love going to Steve Aoki shows! I love the way he uniquely interacts with the crowd and turns every second into a party. It’s the coolest feeling!

What's the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
I had a music meeting with John Legend when I was 12 years old and I sang for him in his house. He told me that I have “artistry” and it was very influential to hear at such a young age. I think having been told that so early in my musical evolution helped me understand that having artistry means continuously being creative, working on my skills, always learning, perfecting my craft, having the fearlessness to be different, and being the truest version of myself!

What’s your favorite thing about music?
There are so many amazing things that I love about music! Music has the ability to mold and shape experiences and moments in our lives, and I think there’s so much beauty in that. It’s such a creative outlet and there are a multitude of ways it can be shared. For me personally, music has gotten me through many difficult times in my life, and has brought me to many of the best & happiest times! If I had to choose just one favorite thing though, it would be the messages in music that have the ability to connect people no matter where in the world.

Any last words or final message for the readers?
I would love for readers to know I’m rooting for them! Whoever is reading this right now, remember that YOU MATTER and to continue on your path and never give up! I’ve learned so much throughout my life and one big takeaway is that it’s too short to be unhappy. Surround yourself with people you love, do what makes you feel good, and soak up all that you can in each day!
