Music Q&A with Valleyheart
Earlier this month, alternative rock trio, Valleyheart released their album, Heal My Head, via Tooth & Nail Records! In this Q&A, the band took some time to answer questions about the album, what they missed about touring while in lockdown, and more! If you’re a fan of Balance & Composure, Manchester Orchestra, Death Cab For Cutie, Silversun Pickups, and/or Copeland, you may very well enjoy Valleyheart. Heal My Head is out now and can be purchased HERE.
(Questions answered by Kevin Klein (vocals, guitar, producer), unless otherwise noted)
Congratulations on the release of Heal My Head! What is your favorite song off the album and what does it mean to you?
Mine changes a lot. But, overall I’d say “Heal My Head” is my favorite listen. It’s a track unlike anything VH has done before. It’s important that creative outlets have no boundaries. Oftentimes you feel you need to sound/look/feel a certain way in order to maintain other’s interest— HMH is my reminder to take those big risks creatively.
What is one thing you did during the recording process of the album that was new to you that you would like to carry into the future when recording more music?
Took our time making meticulously calculated decisions at every step of the recording process. I think we spent a whole day just setting up mics on the drums and making adjustments in order to achieve the exact sounds we were looking for. And before starting each track we would consult for 30 mins or so to assure we were all on the same page sonically.
With Covid putting a stop to touring, what was the thing you missed the most about being out on the road?
Chris (bass): Making new friends and memories along with connecting with old friends, family, fans, and like minded people.
Zakk (drums): Playing loud music every day, hanging, and basketball. Also a big fan of trying falafel in every city in search of the best. So far it’s a tie between Pittsburgh and Toronto :)
Kevin: I missed being able to travel and play music elsewhere. Making friends on the road is so special to me and to miss that was tough.
What instrument do you not play that you hope to learn someday?
Chris: Drums, pedal steel.
Zakk: I wish I could REALLY play the bass.
Kevin: I would love to play violin / strings.
What's the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
Get your friends hyped about what you’re doing, and it will be the most fun you’ve ever had.
ALSO: Songwriting a lot of times isn't about creating something but more like finding something or something that finds you.
We all have our days where it may not be going as well as we’d like. People deal with their worst days in different ways. What helps you get through the bad days? How do you stay positive?
Chris: Skateboarding and talking to loved ones.
Zakk: Bike rides or generally just time spent outside.
Kevin: Being able to talk to friends and recalibrate is huge. Spending time with my family always centers me again as well.
