Show Review: Third Eye Blind Rocks A Packed FivePoint Amphitheater
WORDS AND PHOTOS BY JAZMIN LEMUS
When the Summer Gods Tour was announced earlier this year, I was super pumped up and knew I couldn’t miss it. Third Eye Blind. Jimmy Eat World. Ra Ra Riot. One of the most posi lineups of the year! Saturday, August 3rd was expected to be a fun day of singing along to new songs and the classics that everyone in attendance would be familiar with.
Syracuse’s Ra Ra Riot kicked off the show. The indie rockers played a 30 minute set and had fans hooked from the get go. There were fans up against the barricade that weren’t strangers to the band’s music. While they played “Flowers” and “A Check For Daniel” off their new album, Superbloom, Ra Ra Riot also revisited older songs such as “Bad Times” and “Beta Love”. Ra Ra Riot successfully pumped up the crowd for what was to come from Jimmy Eat World.
Like many fans of alternative rock music, Jimmy Eat World is an all-time favorite of mine as well. The Arizona quartet kicked off their set with a fan favorite, “Pain” followed by “Futures” and “Bleed American”. Fans got up from their seats when the band went even further back into their discography and played “Lucky Denver Mint”. As the band’s set progressed, Jimmy Eat World continued to deliver fan favorites such as “23”, “Work”, “Sweetness”, and many more. With an hour long set, the band still managed to sneak in some of their newer songs such as “Sure and Certain”. As their set was coming to an end and as expected, they wrapped up their performance with “A Praise Chorus” followed by “The Middle”.
Third Eye Blind started their set with “Screamer”, the single the band has been promoting off their sixth studio record, Screamer, out this fall. With a 90-minute set ahead in the night, one would expect the hits, but what else would fans gets? Deep cuts? More new songs?
Throughout the night, fans got to hear their favorites such as “Never Let You Go”, “Graduate”, and “Motorcycle Drive By”, a song that got everyone up off their seat if they weren’t standing up already! But the sing alongs didn’t stop there.
Hearing songs like “Crystal Baller” and “Blinded (When I See You)” live, I once again asked myself why I didn’t see Third Eye Blind in my younger days. The times I’ve been lucky to see them, they have shown why they’re a favorite in the alternative rock scene.
As the night was coming to an end, fans had yet to hear “How’s It Going To Be?” and “Semi-Charmed Life”. Of course the band played those fan favorites, but before they got off stage, Third Eye Blind reminded everyone that a new album was coming out in October.
Well….is it fall yet?
